ROSETTA-Ice team leaves for McMurdo Posted on November 7, 2016 by Susan Howard Scott Springer (ESR) is leaving Christchurch NZ to take a US Air National Guard flight to McMurdo Station, Antarctica with the ROSETTA-Ice 2016 field team. NSF Antarctic HQ in Christchurch. Trying on our “ECW” — Extreme Cold Weather — clothing. Ready for Antarctic weather. The parka is called a Big Red and the boots are called Bunny Boots. We have nametags on our jackets because everyone looks alike in their Big Red. Waiting to board the plane in our ECWs. Of course we were hot, but we have to be dressed to be ready for the cold weather when we land. NSF flight facilities are across the road from the departure lounge. An orange school bus takes us there. There is no commercial flight service to McMurdo. The US Air Force takes people and supplies in a C17 transport plane.
